Wayfarer Music Group is a collective of some of the most creative and forward-thinking minds in music and enter-tainment. Our mission is to transcend traditional industry models and reimagine how artists and creatives are supported—building a sustainable, community-driven ecosystem where innovative voices can freely share their work with lovers of the arts around the world.
Wayfarer Music Group began in 2007 as Wayfarer Records in Olympia, Washington. Over the next 17 years, Wayfarer established itself as a respected home for ambient, chill, and electronic music. In 2023, the label entered a new phase of growth—expanding its artist roster while actively pursuing a long-held vision of a more community-based and artist-centric approach. This philosophy resonated deeply, attracting a wave of notable artists to the label.
The true evolution of Wayfarer took shape with the addition of music industry veteran Sean O’Bryan Smith. Drawing on nearly four decades of experience, Smith helped refine and accelerate Wayfarer’s vision. His involvement led to the arrival of several acclaimed and Grammy Award-winning artists, further solidifying Wayfarer’s reputation as a premier destination within the genre.
Beginning in mid-2023, Wayfarer Records launched an aggressive expansion initiative—adding key staff members, forming strategic business partnerships, and assembling an advisory board made up of experienced leaders from across the industry. During this period, Smith brought longtime collaborator and former business partner Dieter
Spears on board as Director of Creative Media. Together, Smith and Spears rapidly elevated the label’s profile, resulting in a surge of top-charting, critically acclaimed releases and positioning Wayfarer as one of the most sought-after labels in its space.
In mid-2024, founder and CEO Dave Luxton passed the baton to Smith and Spears to carry Wayfarer into its next chapter. By August 2024, Smith and Spears assumed ownership of the company, taking on the roles of President and Vice President, respectively. To reflect this broader, unified vision, Wayfarer Records officially became Wayfarer Music Group.
Throughout 2025, Wayfarer Records achieved a remarkable milestone—releasing an album every week and hosting weekly listening parties. This consistent output and community engagement led to widespread radio support and chart success across multiple outlets for many Wayfarer artists.
Looking ahead to 2026, Wayfarer Music Group announces a new leadership transition. Sean O’Bryan Smith has stepped down from his executive role and will continue as an artist, contributor, and Chairman of the Advisory Board. Dieter Spears steps into the role of President and sole Owner. Billy Denk has accepted the position of Vice President, and JJRD joins the team as Growth & Development Consultant.
With a renewed leadership structure and an unwavering commitment to community, Wayfarer Music Group is poised to grow thoughtfully and sustainably. In an Era of unprecedented media saturation, we remain laser focused and enthusiastic in championing difference and creativity.
