Recently, bass legend and genre icon Michael Manring had a chance to chat with Wayfarer Music Group about his guest appearance on the title track for Ambiente Solstice’s critically acclaimed ambient jazz project entitled Short Stories. During the conversation Michael started off by telling us his basic recording methodology.
Wayfarer Music Group “Tell us about your production process and how you applied it for Short Stories”
Michael “…the first thing I like to do is listen to a track a few times to try to get a sense of what the artist is saying. Then it’s a matter of figuring out how I can help deliver that message. In the case of “Short Stories” I thought it might be good to use an approach I love where I use the fretless in a fairly dramatic role, moving between washy bass notes, Ebow colors and bits of melody.”
Wayfarer Music Group “What gear did you use to get your trademark sound on this?’
Michael “My Zon Sonus Elite Special fretless went into a Markbass Mark Vintage Pre and then to a MOTU UltraLite mk3 interface to Logic Pro 10 for recording.”
Wayfarer Music Group “Anything you’d like to leave us with about your experience with Ambiente Solstice and Short Stories?’’
Michael “I tried to come up with a part that was relatively present, but not overpowering. I love the mood of the piece, so it was a pleasure to get to be part of it!”
The pleasure was all ours Michael and what an honor to have such a legendary artist on this project. You can find more about Michael Manring at his official website HERE
